Freedom Lacrosse camp is used primarily as a recruiting camp for players, including goalies, who want to sharpen their skills both on and off the field prior to playing lacrosse in college. Lacrosse fundamentals, individual skill development, and team play development will be emphasized, with the primary objectives of understanding and enjoying the game of lacrosse. In addition the camp will offer both leadership and team building development that will help each camper both on and off the field through sessions that emphasize being a leader, evaluating and responding to criticism, developing communication skills, and creative problem solving. The camp will alternate locations every year from Mars Hill University and UVA-Wise.
The Showdown "Goalies vs Shooters"
Directors of Freedom Lacrosse, Meghan Dennehy and Kristina Llanes, are excited to offer a specialized overnight camp for those players looking to improve their overall game by focusing on breaking down their position on the field and improving themselves off the field with dedicated leadership sessions.
While the players are on the field, the camp will focus on both sides of the game by improving a players attacking and goalie skills. Campers will work separately on offense and defense, but then will combine for some live action and game situations. The goalie side of camp will be led by Maddie Coleman, assistant coach at Denison University and former goalie from Gettysburg College and Sam Hurley, head coach at Young Harris University and former field player at Lock Haven University. The shooters side of camp will be led by Lisa Valentine, head coach at Christopher Newport University and former attacker at University of Maryland. All sessions will be geared toward breaking down the overall skill of the position with repetitions while elevating field awareness.
While off the field the players will attend character and leadership sessions lead by Freedom Lacrosse’s Director of Character and Leadership, Jen Boa. Here the sessions will be geared toward the whole person, with a focus on behaviors off the field dictating attitudes on the field. These sessions will help campers learn strategies for navigating the difficulties of high school and college life.
Goalie Overview Curriculum- Goalies of all skill levels are welcome to attend. We recognize each goalie has a different style of play, and we are not looking to change any style, but find ways to refine and improve upon essential goalie skills. The curriculum will include group work as well as individualized attention that will help goalies improve in all aspects of the position. Pieces of the goalie position we will aim to break down include fundamentals such as stick work, footwork, and hand-eye coordination. We also will work on goalie communication on the field, situational play, understanding rules of game, and being active outside the crease. Furthermore, mental toughness is a crucial part of succeeding as a goalie and we will go over skills and strategies to help improve this quality.
Shooter Overview Curriculum-This positional camp is designed to improve your shooting percentage! The curriculum will include instruction on a variety of shots such as shooting on the run, finishing inside, free position shots, and more. We will break down the fundamental skills important to shooting and build them through repetition. Players will practice ball handling, stick work, and proper shooting form. We will also teach shooters how to read both the defense and goalie in order to be a "smart" shooter!
We guarantee this camp provides a unique experience that your daughter will not forget.
